Vertigo, Dizziness, & Balance Deficiencies – what they have in common

By: Terry Abrams

Oftentimes when a patient is struggling with vertigo, dizziness, or feeling “off-balance”, vestibular rehabilitation with a vertigo Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist can greatly help the patient to alleviate or mostly minimize the symptoms.  Patients have a hard time connecting some of these sensations into the same category, whether it be feeling like they are on a boat, losing their balance if they move their head rapidly or change positions quickly, or feeling like they are about to “pass out”.  Dizziness and vertigo can be similar feelings, with different degrees of spinning, objects appearing to “move around”, or general off-balance sensations that can cause patients to stumble and sometimes even fall down.

Losing balance and risk of falling is a huge problem with the elderly that can lead to hospitalization, severe injuries, and even death in head trauma cases.  Strategies for falling should always be implemented, as well as techniques for getting up off the ground after falls, which unfortunately needs to be addressed before seniors get into a situation that is tricky to get out of.  For balance and vertigo issues that are caused by “central” problems, these conditions are more difficult to treat because they are caused by disorders affecting the brain and spinal cord.

Diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA or Stroke), Brain lesions (white matter), and many more can cause these types of central vertigo and balance conditions that are treatable, but not necessarily 100% curable. Other Central Vertigo diagnoses would be Brain Tumors, Hydrocephalus, and many other conditions.

If the patient’s issues are not caused by central problems, then it’s likely that the vertigo or dizziness is caused by peripheral disorders. Meniere’s Disease, Vestibular Weaknesses, and BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) are all peripheral vertigo diagnoses. Peripheral Vestibular disorders can be treated very successfully and fully using Vertigo PT, which means the same thing as Vestibular Rehabilitation (or rehab), since the issue is in the inner ear.  Chronic conditions like Meniere’s Disease may have intermittent success, but may be recurrent in the future due to the chronic nature of the condition. But BPPV conditions are completely treatable, and can be often eradicated in under a week, which is a tremendous relief to a patient.

Balance disorders can take longer to get rid of, or to minimize, because of the multiple systems that can be involved in such deficits.  Patients have to be prepared to work very hard in Vertigo PT to help to improve their balance. Dizziness is really just related to Vertigo, or a symptom of Vertigo. And feeling off-balance is connected to vertigo, proprioception, central conditions, or orthopedic issues as well.  Improper foot-ware, decreased sensation in the feet or legs, arthritis in leg joints, and may other orthopedic deficiencies can cause balance disorders that should be treated, before a patient’s balance continues to decline.

If a patient isn’t sure what to do to treat their problem, it’s always best to start with a visit to a Dr. and start with a diagnosis to get the condition properly classified. Then after the visit to the Dr., the patient can then come to Physical Therapy for Vertigo PT, so that the problem can be eliminated or improved.

How to Tie a Theraband

 By: Terry Abrams

Most people have no idea how to tie a Theraband correctly. There are even Therapists who may not know how to tie it correctly either. In this video, we will both explain and demonstrate how to tie a Theraband so that you can exercise with it, and then untie it rapidly without any issues.

A Theraband or resistance band is a synthetic rubber band used for Physical Therapy and light strength exercises. Your PT will most likely use it to isolate strength training for specific muscles that have been affected secondary to a surgery or a non surgical injury/condition. There are several ways to tie a Theraband. Most people tie the band in a simple knot, although this isn’t the best way to tie it because then it’s time consuming to get the knot out. We like to call this simple knot “the lifetime” knot.” You’ll be spending what seems like the rest of your life trying to untie this knot.

The easiest and most useful way to ensure you get those most out of your training session is to tie the Theraband properly with either the Bow Tie or Half Bow Tie knot. For the Bow tie knot, you should have a full bow tie on both ends. To achieve the Half Bow Tie knot you are going to tie it as if you would a bow tie but the other side of the bow is going to come all the way through straight and the other end is a bow tie. When you undo either of these knots, it should be an easy release. There shouldn’t be a knot getting in the way of you untying it, and it will undo rapidly.

Shoulder Injuries- Why They Are So Common

 By: Terry Abrams

For athletes that we rehab here at CardioFlex Therapy, the most common sports injuries that we diagnose are Shoulder injuries.  Shoulder Sports Injuries are frequently caused by athletic activities that involve excessive, repetitive, and overhead motions.  Some sports that involve these movements are swimming, tennis, baseball, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, mixed martial arts, wrestling, gymnastics, cheerleading, and weightlifting.

But most shoulder injuries that occur are not limited to athletes, or sporting accidents only.  Most people hurt their shoulders doing day to day tasks or mundane activities, often times from the comfort of their own home.

Since the shoulder joint is the second worst lever system in the body due to the length of the arm, then it is more likely to be injured than other joints. Additionally, the shoulder is relatively small compared to the hip (worst level system in body), so it doesn’t have the musculature to protect it from outside forces.  If a person tries to lift or hold a heavy object with an outstretched arm, the shoulder has very little strength in this position, will usually take the brunt of the forces, and therefore be easily injured.

The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, but it is also an unstable joint because of its nearly unlimited range of motion.  Because the ball of the upper arm is larger than the socket of the shoulder, it allows for this tremendous range of motion (ROM), but also creates a greater risk of injury. The shoulder joint is supported by soft tissues like the Rotator Cuff muscles, the Labrum, and the Biceps Tendon, which are often damaged when the shoulder is hurt.

When the shoulder is injured, simple stretches or protocols such as icing and applying heat can help relieve pain and prevent it from getting worse. The shoulder is the only joint in the body that can become “frozen” if it’s not being moved or utilized. If left untreated, shoulder pain can increase over time, becoming unbearable and preventing tasks of daily living.  A frozen shoulder will not unfreeze itself unless properly treated by a licensed Physical Therapist. A PT can help patients to recover faster and work with them individually to relieve shoulder pain.

In most states across the country, patients can see a Physical Therapist first without having to visit a Dr. to get a prescription.  In Florida, patients can visit a Physical Therapist for up to 30 days without a Doctor’s Script.  The PT may choose to apply several modalities, such as Ultrasound, Cold Laser, Iontophoresis, Electrical Stimulation, Moist Heat, Ice, Kinesiotaping, etc.  Also, a series of different stretches and resistance exercises with a PT is offered until most of the motion has returned.  No matter how a shoulder injury occurs, everyone wants the same result: a fast recovery.

Founded in 2012, Oscar provides consumers with access to the affordable, high-quality health care they deserve. They began by offering health plans in the Individual market because Oscar believed it was where their member-first approach would set them apart. After only seven years of selling health insurance in the Individual market, their strategy has proved out.

Oscar is now the third largest for-profit national insurer in the Individual market in the United States based on membership, and has expanded to Small Group in 2017 and Medicare Advantage in 2020. Why Maintaining Balance Is Critical

 By: Terry Abrams

Balance is not commonly viewed as an important aspect of physical fitness but it can prove essential in preventing injury. We normally don’t think about our balance until we slip or fall and get injured because of instability. Just like anything else such as muscle and bone strength our balance can deteriorate the older we get. Balance is one of those “use-it-or-lose-it” situations, it must be trained and strengthened over time. Poor balance can lead to instability and put us at risk to slip or fall causing serious injuries such as a broken hip, which in turn, can lead to prolonged injury and a downward spiral into dependence and ill health. The good news is that it’s never too late to start, simple exercises that don’t require a lot of equipment can be utilized to help improve balance.

CardioFlex Therapy is changing Physical Therapy in Davie with Physical and Occupational Therapy at our facility or in the comfort of your home.

CardioFlex is open Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 7 pm, and specializes in Orthopedics, Sports Injury, Neurological Conditions, and other Specialized Programs like TMJ treatment, knee rehabilitation, herniated disk treatments.

Why Physical Therapy First?

 By: Terry Abrams

Are you or a family member dealing with pain and aren’t quite sure who you should go see? A physical therapist might not be the first person you think of, but hopefully, after reading this, it’ll help you understand how we can help.

What does a physical therapist do and how can they help with an injury?

A physical therapist can help you move better. Whether you are having trouble getting out of bed, picking up your kids, having difficulty reaching into the cupboards, or any other daily tasks that you’re having trouble doing, a PT can help.

. We spend one on one time with you to ensure that we tailor to your every need. We also come up with a comprehensive plan to help you get back to what YOU want to do, which is the whole point right? A physical therapist can help facilitate your recovery, with us giving you the tools to be successful. We want to empower you to be able to do things needed to keep you healthy for the long run.

Your physical therapist is focused on getting you back to the things you enjoy

If you choose PT first, you’ll feel better faster, and could potentially save money in the process! Who doesn’t love to save money? In most states, you can see a physical therapist first without needing to see anyone prior. Most people don’t know that, so we’re trying to make sure people understand they have a choice in where they want to go to get better.

I like to compare physical therapy to when something goes wrong with your car. If you need to invest in parts or work done to keep your car running properly, why wouldn’t you do the same thing with regards to your health?

There are many places you can go for an injury, hopefully, you know now that you can choose physical therapy first.

Office Worker Stretching Guide

 By: Terry Abrams

A majority of Americans spend 40 hours a week, 8 hours a day tied to a desk and staring at a computer. The downfall of working behind a desk is that it compromises the well being of your body. Not only does prolonged sitting affect cardiovascular health but also musculoskeletal integrity as well. Prolonged sitting along with bad posture can shorten hamstrings and hip flexors, contribute to neck and back pain, and even diminish core strength.
To keep your body in tip-top shape CardioFlex would like to share some tips on stretches and exercises you can do while at your desk.

(Tip: It is recommended to stand up, walk, stretch, etc. 5-10 min every hour.)
  1. Seated Hamstring Stretch: Hold Stretch for 30 seconds, perform 3 per side.
  2. Seated Thoracic Rotation: Hold stretch for 5 seconds, perform 10 per side.
  3. Upper Trapezius Stretch: Hold stretch for 30 seconds, perform 3 per side.
  4. Levator Scapulae Stretch: Hold for 30 seconds, perform 3 per side.
  5. Hip Flexor Stretch in Half Kneeling: Hold for 30 seconds, perform 3 per side.

Please consult a physical therapist or physician one-on-one if you have any questions, pain or other physical issues*

Physical Therapists Tips to Prevent Arthritis

By: Terry Abrams

Physical Therapy plays a big role in arthritis, it focuses on the body’s ability to engage in movement. Movement can be anything from getting in and out of chairs to climbing stairs, walking in your neighborhood, playing a sport or doing recreational activities. Arthritis commonly occurs when the cartilage — the slick, cushioning surface on the ends of bones — wears away, bone rubs against bone, causing pain, swelling and stiffness. Over time, joints can lose strength and pain may become chronic.

How To Prevent Arthritis? Simple Tips To Stay Healthy

You can’t always prevent Arthritis, there are many risk factors associated with it like increasing age, family history, and gender; women are more prone to Arthritis than men. You may be wondering why women are more prone to Arthritis, some factors that lead to this are : women have less knee cartilage than men due to hormonal difference, women are also at greater risk for an autoimmune condition called Rheumatoid Arthritis, emotional problems, lack of exercise etc.

Even though we can’t prevent the occurrence of Arthritis in most cases, we can give these steps a try and, perhaps, it will help you too.

  1. Maintain a Good Body weight — Excess body weight increases the risk factor for getting Arthritis. More weight means more pressure on joints which means faster joint wear out.
  2. Eat Fish rich in Omega 3 — Certain fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids (fish like salmonmackerelherringlake troutsardines and albacore tuna), a healthy polyunsaturated fat. Omega-3s have a number of health benefits — and may reduce inflammation in the body.
  3. Exercise — Exercise strengthens the muscles around the joints, which protects them from wear and tear. But avoid high impact exercises like long distance running, Soccer etc. as these have adverse effects and increases the wearing.
  4. Try to avoid any Injuries — when you injure your joint — for example, while playing sports or due to an accident — you can damage the cartilage in the knee and cause it to wear out more quickly.
  5. Take care of Joints — While doing physical actions like Lifting an Object lift with your legs instead of back this will reduce the strain on your joints. Similarly while carrying objects also try to distribute the weight.
  6. Stay away from High heels — Human foot is designed in such a way that it is distributing weight equally on entire feet. If you wear a high heels whole body weight is balanced by toes which in turn increases stress. So wear high heels only occasionally.
  7. Check your Vitamin D — Studies show that Vitamin D deficiency also results in Arthritis so include Vitamin D in your diet.
  8. Drink water — The cartilage in our joints is made up mostly of water, which is what makes it such a great cushion for the joints. When we’re dehydrated, water gets sucked out of the cartilage and it’s more easily damaged by wear and tear. So drink water.
  9. Consult your doctor — If your feel that you are having Arthritis, consult your doctor and take immediate steps to slow down the wear and tear on your joints.

At CardioFlex Therapy we can help you increase mobility and manage the pain associated with arthritis. Call us for information or to make an appointment at 954-693-9090.Article Credits to: Amy Lawrence, Researcher in Ayurveda

Stretches for Morning Back Pain Relief by Physical Therapists

By: Terry Abrams

Here at CardioFlex, we know that on some mornings it’s harder to get out of bed than others. This is because one of the most common complaints that patients have over 50 is… lower back pain. CardioFlex would like to share some tips to help combat the stiffness and discomfort of lower back pain. Here are 5 stretches that you can do every morning before you get your day started. We hope you enjoy!

Lying Quadriceps Stretch

This list wouldn’t be complete without a stretch for the quadriceps and hip flexors. Lie sideways, keep the legs stacked and rest your head on the bottom arm.

Bend the top leg and grab its ankle with the top arms.

Pull the leg to bring its heel as close to the butt as possible.

Hold the stretch for 30 seconds. Then lie on the other side and stretch for the same duration.

Supine Spinal Twist

The supine twist stretches the spine and back muscles. It’ll also stimulate your kidneys, urinary bladder and other internal organs.

Lie on your back and keep the left knee bent at 90 degrees.

Lift the left foot and cross it over the right leg. Then use your right arm to press the right knee to the floor.

Keep the shoulders flat on the floor throughout. Hold the stretch for 20 seconds, then alternate sides.

Side Stretch

This stretch targets your obliques (side abs), outer thighs and the shoulders. Stand upright and place your left arm on a chair or bed. Cross the left leg in front of the right one.

Raise your right arm straight over your head while you bend your hips to the right side.

Extend your right arm to the left as far as possible.

Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds and then switch sides.

Neck Stretches Side to Side

These stretches alleviate neck pain and undo the effects of sitting at a desk all day. Sit upright, then lean your head to the left side. Pull it with your left arm and stretch it for 15 seconds. Bend your neck to the right side and hold the stretch for the same duration.

Knee to Chest Stretch

This exercise stretches the lower back, hamstrings, and glutes. Feel free to perform it while lying on the floor. Lie on your back and bend your knees.

Grab both legs with your hands and pull your knees as close to the chest as possible.

Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, then rest and repeat once.

Remember to breathe deeply while holding the stretch.

CardioFlex is open Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 7 pm, and specializes in Orthopedics, Sports Injury, Neurological Conditions, and other Specialized Programs like TMJ treatment, knee rehabilitation, herniated disk treatments and more. Whatever your condition is, come in for a consultation. We accept all insurances, including Medicaid and Worker’s Comp.

Give us a call: 954-693-9090

If for any reason these exercises increase the pain or do not relieve any symptoms it may be beneficial to consult a physical therapist.
