Physical Therapists’ Tips to Avoid Pain During the Holidays

“To most of us the holiday season is all about tradition, fun, and family, but if we’re not careful, the holidays can also be a pain in the neck—literally—”says the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). “Typical holiday activities, such as shopping ’till you drop’, lifting heavy boxes and presents, and countless hours of cooking and baking, can cause muscles to work harder than usual, many times resulting in neck, shoulder, and back pain.”
Let us help you stay safe during this busy season! Using proper body mechanics can help prevent muscle and joint discomfort this holiday season, as recommended by the American Physical Therapy Association.
1- When lifting, make sure you:
  • Test an object’s weight before attempting to lift heavy packages or luggage. Try pushing it with your foot. If it seems too heavy then take smaller loads, which are less likely to strain your back and are easier on arm and shoulder muscles.
  • Keep the load close to your body when lifting.
  • Ask for help or use an assistive device to lift heavy objects.
  • Seek help from a physical therapist if your back pain lasts more than a few days or gets worse.
2-  When you’re shopping:
  • Distribute the weight of shopping bags equally on both sides of your body.
  • Consider carrying a small backpack rather than a heavy purse.
  • Wear comfortable shoes; carrying packages while wearing high heels on hard surfaces can contribute to foot and ankle injuries.
  • Don’t carry overstuffed shopping bags for extended periods of time.
  • Consider using a shopping cart or getting help to carry packages to your car.
  • Avoid prime shopping times to decrease wait times that can increase or exceed standing/walking time tolerances.
  • Plan your shopping trip ahead of time. Having a set list of gifts you intend to buy will help you plan for extra help, if needed, to carry purchases.
3-  When Cooking and/or baking:
  • Choose a work surface that is approximately at the level of your forearms when your elbows are bent at a right angle (90 degrees) or at elbow height. Shoulders and upper back will be in better position and this will decrease the risk of upper back, neck, and shoulder strain.
  • Work on a padded surface.  If you have tile, vinyl, or wood flooring, for cushioning consider purchasing an inexpensive area rug  that has grippers on the back to keep the rug from moving and you from slipping or tripping. Standing long periods on a hard surface can lead to muscle fatigue and back ache.
  • Use good lifting mechanics when retrieving small kitchen appliances from lower shelves or drawers. Kneel down if necessary and keep the object close to your body.
  • Be careful when bending to take items in and out of a conventional floor-model stove. If that turkey is heavy you will need help to get it out of the oven, not because you can’t lift it, it’s the position of the body while bending and carrying than can really strain your back.
  • Frequently perform gentle movement exercises to keep the muscles in your neck and shoulders loose.
Physical therapists are highly-educated, licensed health care professionals who can help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility – in many cases without expensive surgery or the side effects of prescription medications.

Join CardioFlex Therapy for the fun Tough Mudder!

http://www.cardioflextherapy.com/blog/join-cardioflex-therapy-for-the-fun-tough-mudder/

Tough Mudder is a 5 or 10 mile course with obstacles designed to drag you out of your comfort zone. Tough Mudder isn’t about how fast you can cross the finish line, it’s about pushing yourself, about teamwork, camaraderie, and accomplishing something extraordinary. So challenge yourself, escape the ordinary and join our physical therapists in this fun event to benefit the American Liver Foundation. Here are the event details:
When:
October 13-14
Location:
Clear Springs Ranch
5020 Cox Rd.
Bartow , FL , 33830
Time:
begins at 9:00 am
Specific time assigned to each participant
Why do we support this event? Because we want to promote education, advocacy, support services and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease. Liver disease patients are at a greater risk of Sarcopenia as it triggers it, and we develop exercise therapy plans for liver disease patients.  Physical therapists are well-positioned among the health care team to screen for sarcopenia (the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass – 0.5–1% loss per year after the age of 50- , quality, and strength associated with aging) in those with CKD and for the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions that may affect functional performance. Given the consequences of both low muscle mass and low bone mineral density, appropriate and timely physical therapy is important for fall risk assessment and intervention to minimize the susceptibility to bone fracture. While strength training has been studied less frequently than aerobic training for the management of secondary CKD conditions, evidence suggests that this patient population benefits from participation in strength training programs, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

Importance of Physical Therapy in Cancer Recovery

http://www.cardioflextherapy.com/blog/importance-of-physical-therapy-in-cancer-recovery/

By: Terry Abrams

Cancer rehabilitation is a growing area in medicine due to the increase in cancer survivorship. More and more individuals are beating cancer because of advances in medical technology, treatment and early detection. According to recent research from the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate of all cancers that were diagnosed between 2003 and 2009 is 68 percent. This is a 20 percent increase from 1975 to 1977. It is also estimated that over 13 million Americans have a history of cancer, and in 2014 there were an expected 1.6 million new cases. This means that the number of cancer survivors will continue to increase in the U.S. With more cancer survivors, there will need to be more recovery strategies.
Cancer treatment is a grueling course, leaving many people exhausted, weak and with a compromised immune system. Just getting out of bed can be a huge and daunting task, let alone exercising in a gymnasium or playing at the park with grandchildren. This is where a physical therapist comes in. Despite advances in medical treatments, individuals that receive cancer treatments typically experience extensive physical limitations during and after treatments. These limitations include and are not limited to cancer-related fatigue (CRF), pain, nerve damage, lymphedema, deconditioning, as well as incontinence.
There is strong evidence to support conservative management of these impairments through physical therapy. As each individual experiences different impairments during and after cancer treatment, it is important to have an individualized evaluation to focus your rehabilitation. Physical therapy can address common cancer related impairments including:
Lymphedema: Effective lymphedema management is accomplished through manual lymph drainage, range of motion exercises, aerobic exercise, and lymphatic bandaging.
CRF: Individualized aerobic training, strength training and functional management training is known to reduce effects of cancer related fatigue both during and after medical cancer treatments.
Pain: There are many pain relief strategies that can reduce the intensity and frequency of pain after cancer treatment. Specifically, treatment strategies including soft tissue mobilization, therapeutic massage, modalities, therapeutic stretching and strengthening.
Peripheral neuropathy: Often times, cancer survivors experience peripheral neuropathy, which is abnormal nerve function that can be experienced as pain, numbness and tingling. Physical therapy can help to improve nerve function or compensate for nerve dysfunction.
Deconditioning: Rebuilding endurance for activities and cardiovascular function can be difficult during and after cancer treatment. A skilled physical therapist is able to educate and monitor cardiovascular endurance training.
Genitourinary complications: For men undergoing treatment for prostate cancer and women undergoing treatment for bladder or ovarian cancer, incontinence and sexual dysfunction are common. A skilled physical therapist can help to rebuild the strength of the pelvic floor in order to improve urinary continence and reduce pain related to sexual function.
In a recent study published April 2015 in Physical Therapy Journal, researchers found that physical therapy services are more commonly sought out for individuals surviving breast and genitourinary cancers. Researchers sought to find the characteristics of patients with cancer that were referred for outpatient physical therapy and common clinical findings. Over the course of two years, data from 418 patients were analyzed. Genitourinary and breast cancers were the most common types of cancer in their sample. The most common impairments were strength loss and soft tissue dysfunction. Lymphedema was the most common issue for people with breast cancer and incontinence was the most common complaint for people that had genitourinary cancers. They also noted that pain and high fatigue levels were prevalent in individuals that had undergone radiation therapy. This study shows that therapy services are being utilized for individuals that have survived cancer, particularly breast and genitourinary cancer. However, this study also suggests that a large portion of cancer survivors are not seeking out rehabilitation services, even though they would likely find it highly beneficial.
According to the European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, most-mastectomy physical therapy ‘widely improves’ a patient’s quality of life. After mastectomy surgery, patients may experience tightness around the surgical site caused by scar tissue formation. The result can be very dense tissue under the incision, which is painful and can restrict range of motion. The restricted range of motion puts women at risk for a painful condition known as Frozen Shoulder. Early treatment by a physical therapist can help reduce the pain and help regain functional range of motion and strength.
The good news is that it is never too late to utilize rehabilitation services for cancer recovery. If you find that you are having trouble accomplishing daily tasks or functioning at your prior level of independence, seek out a rehabilitation expert and regain your vitality.

Physical Therapists Tips to Prevent Arthritis

http://www.cardioflextherapy.com/blog/physical-therapists-tips-to-prevent-arthritis/

Physical Therapy plays a big role in arthritis, it focuses on the body’s ability to engage in movement. Movement can be anything from getting in and out of chairs to climbing stairs, walking in your neighborhood, playing a sport or doing recreational activities. Arthritis commonly occurs when the cartilage — the slick, cushioning surface on the ends of bones — wears away, bone rubs against bone, causing pain, swelling and stiffness. Over time, joints can lose strength and pain may become chronic.

How To Prevent Arthritis? Simple Tips To Stay Healthy

You can’t always prevent Arthritis, there are many risk factors associated with it like increasing age, family history, and gender; women are more prone to Arthritis than men. You may be wondering why women are more prone to Arthritis, some factors that lead to this are :  women have less knee cartilage than men due to hormonal difference, women are also at greater risk for an autoimmune condition called Rheumatoid Arthritis, emotional problems, lack of exercise etc.

Even though we can’t prevent the occurrence of Arthritis in most cases, we can give these steps a try and, perhaps, it will help you too.

  1. Maintain a Good Body weight — Excess body weight increases the risk factor for getting Arthritis. More weight means more pressure on joints which means faster joint wear out.
  2. Eat Fish rich in Omega 3 — Certain fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids (fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout,   sardines and albacore tuna), a healthy polyunsaturated fat. Omega-3s have a number of health benefits — and may reduce inflammation in the body.
  3. Exercise — Exercise strengthens the muscles around the joints, which protects them from wear and tear. But avoid high impact exercises like long distance running, Soccer etc. as these have adverse effects and increases the wearing.
  4. Try to avoid any Injuries — when you injure your joint — for example, while playing sports or due to an accident — you can damage the cartilage in the knee and cause it to wear out more quickly.
  5. Take care of Joints — While doing physical actions like Lifting an Object lift with your legs instead of back this will reduce the strain on your joints. Similarly while carrying objects also try to distribute the weight.
  6. Stay away from High heels — Human foot is designed in such a way that it is distributing weight equally on entire feet. If you wear a high heels whole body weight is balanced by toes which in turn increases stress. So wear high heels only occasionally.
  7. Check your Vitamin D — Studies show that Vitamin D deficiency also results in Arthritis so include Vitamin D in your diet.
  8. Drink water — The cartilage in our joints is made up mostly of water, which is what makes it such a great cushion for the joints. When we’re dehydrated, water gets sucked out of the cartilage and it’s more easily damaged by wear and tear. So drink water.
  9. Consult your doctor — If your feel that you are having Arthritis, consult your doctor and take immediate steps to slow down the wear and tear on your joints.
At CardioFlex Therapy we can help you increase mobility and manage the pain associated with arthritis. Call us for information or to make an appointment at 954-693-9090.

Fix Your Posture To Improve Your Strength

http://www.cardioflextherapy.com/blog/fix-your-posture-to-improve-your-strength/

Most of us who work in an office setting are most likely sitting slouched over our desk chair and staring at a computer screen creating bad posture in our bodies. Having poor posture can result in tremendous structural damage to the spine, shoulders, hips, and knees. It can lead to things such as joint pain throughout your body, reduced flexibility, and compromised muscles which can limit your body’s ability to burn fat and build strength.

Over time, your poor posture takes a tremendous toll on your spine, shoulders, hips, and knees. In fact, it can cause a cascade of structural flaws that result in acute problems, such as joint pain throughout your body, reduced flexibility, and compromised muscles, all of which can limit your ability to burn fat and build strength. But don’t worry—all these problems can be corrected. Are you ready to straighten yourself out? Use this head-to-toe guide to make sure your posture is picture-perfect.

A treatment approach that has been clinically effective involves stretching of over active/tight muscles, strengthening of under active/weak muscles, and utilization of exercises that incorporate functional movement patterns last. Article credits to BodyStructure.

CardioFlex accepts Worker’s Compensation

CardioFlex Therapy is happy to announce that we now accept Worker’s Compensation insurance through different states across the country. CardioFlex is now in network with the following state’s Workers’ Comp insurance plans: DC, Idaho, Iowa, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Washington.

If an injured worker is vacationing, traveling, or was simply hurt while in another state and comes to the South Florida area, CardioFlex can treat them for our five service types that we offer to all Workers’ Comp companies. Our service types include Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Massage Therapy (MT), Work Conditioning (WC), and Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE’s).

CardioFlex is also in network with all major Florida Workers’ Comp insurance companies, so by covering so many more insurance plans across the U.S., we are adding additional coverage to an expanding market. Workers’ compensation is a form of insurance providing wage replacement and medical benefits to employees injured in the course of employment in exchange for mandatory relinquishment of the employee’s right to sue their employer for the tort of negligence.

Workers’ comp insurance provides five basic benefits: Medical care: Paid for by your employer to help you recover from an injury or illness caused by work. Temporary disability benefits: Payments if you lose wages because your injury prevents you from doing your usual job while recovering. If an employee gets hurt or ill due to their job, worker’s compensation provides coverage. The costs of medical care, rehabilitation treatments and lost wages are covered by this insurance if the injury is due to the employment. The average total cost per workers’ compensation claim in Florida has grown moderately in recent years, according to a recent study by the Workers Compensation Research Institute (WCRI). All of the key components of total costs per claim experienced moderate increases from 2011 to 2016 in Florida.

For Worker’s Comp patients, CardioFlex also offers the flexibility of coming to our Outpatient Clinic in Davie, FL, or for us to send our Home Therapists to the homes of our patients.

CardioFlex uses latest tools in Sports Rehab & Physical Therapy

CardioFlex is excited to introduce what we all call the coolest tool for Sports Rehab & Physical Therapy performance training; The Recoil 360°. “Resistance and assistance training is key to maximizing power, speed and vertical jump”. This Bungee Resistance Trainer helps us to train athletes in every direction, with or without a partner. We can train patients for any sport: baseball, soccer, football, basketball, tennis, rugby, lacrosse, swimming, martial arts, hockey, volleyball, softball, track & field, rowing, golf, bowling, and more.

At CardioFlex, we will use this device for specific resisted agility and plyometric rehabilitation exercises to build explosive muscle strength and power in our patient’s core and lower body. Bad Santa Bus Loop

CardioFlex is proud to support the Bad Santa Bus Loop benefiting many local charities including the Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation. This event takes place on December 15, 2017 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The Bus Loop continues to spread fun throughout South Florida! The Bus Loop is serving our local community by raising funds for the designated charities in their respective cities while giving the area’s young professionals a Bus Loop experience of a lifetime!

All proceeds directly benefit the charities. Thanks to the efforts of the volunteers, the Bus Loops continue to operate throughout South Florida. If you have not yet tried the Bus Loop, try it! You’ll get hooked!

The Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation provides financial assistance for underprivileged children fighting cancer. As advocates, the Foundation helps raise additional funds through media partnerships to ensure ill children maintain access to basic human necessities during times of crisis.   Often these children and their families fall into the Federal Poverty Level which qualifies them to receive government assistance such as Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income; however, there remains a large gap for financial need.  A child diagnosed with cancer requires a full time caregiver in order to increase his/her chances for survival.  Children can’t go back to school for a long period of time because of the intense treatment, and the number of days spent in the hospital.  Families under these circumstances often lose income because one parent usually resigns from work.  For a single parent the only source of income is often lost. As a result, the Foundation is dedicated to providing temporary financial relief to help families pay for everyday needs such as medical, utility, rent, mortgage, car, and groceries.  This direct and tangible assistance for access to basic necessities becomes vital to the survival of these children while they receive cancer treatment. CardioFlex offers specific cancer rehab treatments, visit our Services page for detailed information on how we can help you.

MDA Muscle Walk of Palm Beach

CardioFlex is proud to support the MDA Muscle Walk of Palm Beach benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This event takes place on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at the Palm Beach Zoo in West Palm Beach, FL. At MDA, families are our stars and heroes. Muscle Walk gives us the opportunity to unite around a cause that binds us together and celebrate all the stars in our lives — you, supporters, caregivers, friends and family — who make this journey possible.

Sign up for Muscle Walk as an individual or with a team, or create your own team. Ask others to join you and support you with a donation — they’ll be grateful for a fun, easy way to fight back in your honor that really makes a difference.

This year, we need you to join us at MDA Muscle Walk so we can continue to enhance our support and care, offer the highest-quality programs and accelerate research efforts to bring more treatments to families faster.

While no cure exists for any of the dystrophies, physical therapy can help maintain function by managing complications of disease progression, such as weakness and contractures. Each patient with MD has unique needs based on age, the type of dystrophy, and the progression of symptoms. At CardioFlex we are prepared to offer the best physical therapy customized to our patient needs. Come to a consultation at our outpatient clinic in Davie and let us help you.

Light the Night Walk - Fort Lauderdale

CardioFlex is proud to support the Light the Night Walk Fort Lauderdale benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This event takes place on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at CB Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, FL. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk funds treatments that are saving the lives of patients today. LLS is making cures happen by providing patient support services, advocating for lifesaving treatments and pioneering the most promising cancer research anywhere. And it’s all happening now. Not someday, but today.

When you or someone you love hears the words “you have cancer”… It’s one of the darkest moments in your life.

At Light The Night, it is our aim to bring light to the darkness of cancer through research and cures. Light The Night is a series of fundraising campaigns benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) funding of research to find blood cancer cures. We bring hope instead of despair by working to ensure access to treatments for all blood cancer patients. We bring communities together to celebrate those who are fighting the disease and to honor those we have lost.

We are taking steps to end cancer. WE LIGHT THE NIGHT.
