Knee Pain? Symptoms of Chondromalacia

http://www.cardioflextherapy.com/blog/knee-pain-symptoms-of-chondromalacia/

If you are feeling a dull, aching pain in the front of your knee, behind your kneecap, a pain that can get worse when you go up or down stairs. It can flare up after you have been sitting in one position for a long time. Is your knee painful and stiff when you stand up after watching a movie or after a long trip in a car or plane? You could be suffering from Chondromalacia. Chondromalacia also can make your knee joint “catch” meaning you suddenly have trouble moving it past a certain point, or “give way” (buckle unexpectedly). These symptoms tend to occur when you bend your knee repeatedly, especially when you go down stairs. In some cases, the painful knee also can appear puffy or swollen. Chondromalacia can cause a creaky sound or grinding sensation when you move your knee. Let’s talk a bit about this condition, and how physical therapy will help you.

“The joints in your body are cushioned with a type of tissue called articular cartilage. This tough, rubbery tissue covers the ends of bones inside a joint. As the joint moves, the cartilage helps to cushion the bones and allows them to glide smoothly against one another. Sometimes, the cartilage inside a joint softens and breaks down. This condition is called chondromalacia. The cartilage loses its ability to protect the ends of the bones as the joint moves. The ends of the bones can rub together, causing pain.” according to Harvard Medical School.

Chondromalacia can affect any joint, but the most common location is inside the knee. It usually begins as a small area of softened cartilage behind the kneecap (patella) that can be painful. Eventually, more of the cartilage softens, and the softened cartilage can crack or shred into a mass of fibers. In severe cases, the damaged cartilage can wear away completely, down to the undersurface of the kneecap. If this happens, the exposed kneecap’s bony surface can grind painfully against other knee bones. Also, bits of cartilage can float inside the joint, further irritating the cells that line the joint. In response, these cells produce fluid inside the joint (called a joint effusion).

At CardioFlex Therapy, our physical therapists are professionally trained to help patients that are suffering from Chondromalacia, and can be especially helpful to safely guide patients through these treatments: using knee tape, a brace or a special patellar-tracking sleeve to keep your kneecap aligned properly, starting an exercise program to strengthen the muscles around your knee. We recommend avoiding high-impact exercises, avoiding all kneeling and squatting.

What is it like to be a physical therapist? by CardioFlex

http://www.cardioflextherapy.com/blog/what-is-it-like-to-be-a-physical-therapist-by-cardioflex/

What is it like to be a physical therapist? Simple: if you are passionate about helping others recover from less than perfect mobility, you will love your job as a physical therapist. Physical therapists are experts in the musculoskeletal system, and we’re now a doctoring profession. We have the ability to evaluate, come up with a physical therapy diagnosis and treat that diagnosis as we see fit, according to best practices and best evidence.
It is a misconception that physical therapists only practice massage therapy, apply hot and cold compresses, and send their patients home with some exercises. In fact, physical therapists need to know your body very well to not cause further damage, but to begin expected improvements in whatever condition the patient may be suffering from.
“All physical therapists are licensed by the state and must have fulfilled standard academic requirements. You can find work with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy from one of the 700 or so accredited undergraduate programs in the U.S., but those who did not take this route in college can attend master’s programs to study rehabilitation therapy. Aspiring physical therapists should study biology, biomechanics, calculus and statistics, chemistry, nutrition, human growth and development, physics, and psychology.” says The Princeton Review. Indeed, owner and director at CardioFlex Therapy in Davie Fl, Terry Abrams, first got a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and then received his Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy, later opening his own practice serving the Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade communities.
Physical therapists examine patients and develop a plan of care that promotes movement, reduces pain, restores function, and prevents disability. The physical therapist works with the patient, family members, and other health care providers to ensure the goals of the plan of care are met and the patient outcomes are optimal.
“Therapeutic exercise and functional training are the cornerstones of physical therapist treatment. Depending on the particular needs of a patient and client, physical therapists may “manipulate” a joint (that is, perform certain types of passive movements at the end of the individual’s range of motion) or massage a muscle to promote proper movement and function. Physical therapists may use other techniques such as electrotherapy, ultrasound (high-frequency waves that produce heat), hot packs, and ice in addition to other treatments. Physical therapists can also help to prevent the loss of mobility by developing fitness and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.” as reported in the American Physical Therapy Association, APTA, a great source of information for students, practitioners and patients.
For CardioFlex Therapy owner Terry Abrams, there is no condition he will say no to, he is well versed, well studied and keeps up with the latest in the PT industry. He likes his profession and he works hard at every patient’s diagnosis, he doesn’t give up until he starts seeing improvements. Many of his patients require short time treatments and easily improve, but for those that require more analysis, more questions, and are in less than optimal condition,  they will become Terry’s next challenge, many will not be very optimistic believing their condition cannot and will not improve, only to be surprised very quickly. “This is the best part of my career”, says Terry, “to see a patient achieve a full recovery after visiting my practice. That’s when it is most rewarding!”
The less glamorous and rewarding part of being a Physical Therapist is the business side of it; billing, insurances and any paperwork associated with it, which is impossible to not run into. What is clear at CardioFlex Therapy is that everyone is involved and interested in the patient’s recovery, which makes working as a physical therapist very rewarding.

Importance of Physical Therapy for Cerebral Palsy

http://www.cardioflextherapy.com/blog/physical-therapy-and-cerebral-palsy/

Physical therapy is often the first step in treating cerebral palsy. It can help improve motor skills and can prevent movement problems from getting worse over time. Physical therapy implements strength and flexibility exercises, heat treatment, massages and special equipment to give individuals with cerebral palsy more independence, as reported by the Cerebral Palsy Guide.
The extent to which physical therapy helps depends on the severity and type of each case of cerebral palsy. Individuals with milder cases of CP may only require some physical therapy to treat their condition. In more severe cases, it may be used alongside other treatments or medications. Beginning physical therapy as early as possible usually gives them the best chances at improvement.
Many individuals with CP live highly functional lives as adults. Many have careers and families. In adulthood, people with CP often focus on pain management, conserving energy, adaptive equipment, and environment modifications to promote independence at work and at home. Physical therapists can help with managing these concerns. Like many adults, individuals with CP have muscle and joint pain in adulthood. Physical therapists can prescribe an exercise routine that enables the individual to stay strong and minimize joint issues.
Physical therapists are skilled in all of these areas, and they partner with people with CP and their caregivers to address their individual goals for realistic, positive outcomes. There are many benefits of physical therapy, from improving mobility to preventing future issues such as contractures and joint dislocations by keeping the body strong and flexible. Many children and adults with CP increase their level of self-reliance through physical therapy.
The main goal of physical therapy is to make everyday movements easier for people with cerebral palsy.
Physical therapy can improve: Coordination, Balance, Strength, Flexibility, Endurance, Pain management, Posture, Gait, and overall health.
The types of exercises used vary and have specific benefits for each type of cerebral palsy. Some of the benefits by cerebral palsy type include:
  1. Spastic – Physical therapy can reduce the muscle tension and jerky movements associated with spastic cerebral palsy. Exercises such as stretching can even relieve stiffness over time.
  2. Athetoid – People with athetoid cerebral palsy use physical therapy to increase muscle tone and gain more control over their movements.
  3. Ataxic – There are exercises that can improve balance problems faced by those with ataxic cerebral palsy.
Physical therapists also tailor treatment based on the location of movement issues. Movement issues in children with cerebral palsy can be limited to one half of the body (hemiplegia), the legs (diplegia) or in the torso and all four limbs (quadriplegia). Therapists prescribe special exercises and routines for hemiplegia, diplegia and quadriplegia that may help the child regain movement in the affected area over time.

Physical therapy can also treat a range of other issues experienced by children and adults with CP, including:
– Scoliosis – an abnormal curvature in the spine, common in up to 30 percent of children with cerebral palsy.
– Thoracic kyphosis – a contortion of the upper spine.
– Lumbar lordosis – a contortion of the lower spine.
– Pelvic inclination – a protrusion of the pelvis either in the front or rear.
– Pelvic rotation – a horizontal contortion of the pelvis.
– Pelvic obliquity – a contortion of the pelvis at angle.
– Knee deformity – abnormally straight or bent knees that may be caused by pelvic deformities.
– Shortened Achilles tendon – a shortened tendon that causes issues with walking and standing.
– Hand and wrist deformities – abnormal flexing in the hand and wrist that prevents development of fine motor skills.

Fix Your Posture To Improve Your Strength

http://www.cardioflextherapy.com/blog/fix-your-posture-to-improve-your-strength/

Most of us who work in an office setting are most likely sitting slouched over our desk chair and staring at a computer screen creating bad posture in our bodies. Having poor posture can result in tremendous structural damage to the spine, shoulders, hips, and knees. It can lead to things such as joint pain throughout your body, reduced flexibility, and compromised muscles which can limit your body’s ability to burn fat and build strength.

Over time, your poor posture takes a tremendous toll on your spine, shoulders, hips, and knees. In fact, it can cause a cascade of structural flaws that result in acute problems, such as joint pain throughout your body, reduced flexibility, and compromised muscles, all of which can limit your ability to burn fat and build strength. But don’t worry—all these problems can be corrected. Are you ready to straighten yourself out? Use this head-to-toe guide to make sure your posture is picture-perfect.

A treatment approach that has been clinically effective involves stretching of over active/tight muscles, strengthening of under active/weak muscles, and utilization of exercises that incorporate functional movement patterns last. Article credits to BodyStructure.

CardioFlex accepts Worker’s Compensation

CardioFlex Therapy is happy to announce that we now accept Worker’s Compensation insurance through different states across the country. CardioFlex is now in network with the following state’s Workers’ Comp insurance plans: DC, Idaho, Iowa, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Washington.

If an injured worker is vacationing, traveling, or was simply hurt while in another state and comes to the South Florida area, CardioFlex can treat them for our five service types that we offer to all Workers’ Comp companies. Our service types include Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Massage Therapy (MT), Work Conditioning (WC), and Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE’s).

CardioFlex is also in network with all major Florida Workers’ Comp insurance companies, so by covering so many more insurance plans across the U.S., we are adding additional coverage to an expanding market. Workers’ compensation is a form of insurance providing wage replacement and medical benefits to employees injured in the course of employment in exchange for mandatory relinquishment of the employee’s right to sue their employer for the tort of negligence.

Workers’ comp insurance provides five basic benefits: Medical care: Paid for by your employer to help you recover from an injury or illness caused by work. Temporary disability benefits: Payments if you lose wages because your injury prevents you from doing your usual job while recovering. If an employee gets hurt or ill due to their job, worker’s compensation provides coverage. The costs of medical care, rehabilitation treatments and lost wages are covered by this insurance if the injury is due to the employment. The average total cost per workers’ compensation claim in Florida has grown moderately in recent years, according to a recent study by the Workers Compensation Research Institute (WCRI). All of the key components of total costs per claim experienced moderate increases from 2011 to 2016 in Florida.

For Worker’s Comp patients, CardioFlex also offers the flexibility of coming to our Outpatient Clinic in Davie, FL, or for us to send our Home Therapists to the homes of our patients.

CardioFlex uses latest tools in Sports Rehab & Physical Therapy

CardioFlex is excited to introduce what we all call the coolest tool for Sports Rehab & Physical Therapy performance training; The Recoil 360°. “Resistance and assistance training is key to maximizing power, speed and vertical jump”. This Bungee Resistance Trainer helps us to train athletes in every direction, with or without a partner. We can train patients for any sport: baseball, soccer, football, basketball, tennis, rugby, lacrosse, swimming, martial arts, hockey, volleyball, softball, track & field, rowing, golf, bowling, and more.

At CardioFlex, we will use this device for specific resisted agility and plyometric rehabilitation exercises to build explosive muscle strength and power in our patient’s core and lower body. The Recoil 360° allows patients to maximize motions that are sport specific with resistance and assistance training. The cord stretches against movements to build strength, or pulls patients along to increase speed and improve the body’s efficiency during direction changes.

We will help our patients to improve their overall athleticism with increased power, explosiveness, and strength, with this bungee cord and all of our other equipment. We can either train patients at our Davie Facility or have one of our Physical Therapists visit them at their home. The Wine Opener - Sip...Savor...Cure!

CardioFlex is proud to support The Wine Opener – Sip…Savor…Cure benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This event takes place on Friday, October 20, 2017 at the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club in Boca Raton, FL.

When his son, Nicholas, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, Sal Capano became a dedicated and determined volunteer for the CF Foundation. He created the Care Today…Cure Tomorrow event and never missed an opportunity to educate the world about CF and recruit people to help in his quest to raise funds and find a cure for Nicholas and everyone else who battles the disease. Sal Capano passed away in 2007. In tribute, his wife Lauri and a group of Sal’s friends, affectionately known as “Sal’s Pals,” continued his “Care Today…Cure Tomorrow event in the Spirit of Sal Capano” to help raise funds for CF research.

Seven years ago, event chairs Lauri Capano, David Greenberg and Michael Rankin added a wine-tasting element to the dinner event and created what we know today as “The Wine Opener. 2017 Walk to End Alzheimer's - Broward County

CardioFlex is proud to support the 2017 Walk to End Alzheimer’s Broward County on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease!

When you participate in Walk to End Alzheimer, your fundraising dollars fuel our mission, and your participation in the event helps to change the level of Alzheimer’s awareness in your community. The Alzheimer’s Association provides free, easy-to-use tools and staff support to help participants reach their fundraising goal. While there is no fee to register, we encourage participants to fund-raise in order to contribute to the cause and raise awareness.
