Vertigo, Dizziness, & Balance Deficiencies – what they have in common

By: Terry Abrams

Oftentimes when a patient is struggling with vertigo, dizziness, or feeling “off-balance”, vestibular rehabilitation with a vertigo Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist can greatly help the patient to alleviate or mostly minimize the symptoms.  Patients have a hard time connecting some of these sensations into the same category, whether it be feeling like they are on a boat, losing their balance if they move their head rapidly or change positions quickly, or feeling like they are about to “pass out”.  Dizziness and vertigo can be similar feelings, with different degrees of spinning, objects appearing to “move around”, or general off-balance sensations that can cause patients to stumble and sometimes even fall down.

Losing balance and risk of falling is a huge problem with the elderly that can lead to hospitalization, severe injuries, and even death in head trauma cases.  Strategies for falling should always be implemented, as well as techniques for getting up off the ground after falls, which unfortunately needs to be addressed before seniors get into a situation that is tricky to get out of.  For balance and vertigo issues that are caused by “central” problems, these conditions are more difficult to treat because they are caused by disorders affecting the brain and spinal cord.

Diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA or Stroke), Brain lesions (white matter), and many more can cause these types of central vertigo and balance conditions that are treatable, but not necessarily 100% curable. Other Central Vertigo diagnoses would be Brain Tumors, Hydrocephalus, and many other conditions.

If the patient’s issues are not caused by central problems, then it’s likely that the vertigo or dizziness is caused by peripheral disorders. Meniere’s Disease, Vestibular Weaknesses, and BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) are all peripheral vertigo diagnoses. Peripheral Vestibular disorders can be treated very successfully and fully using Vertigo PT, which means the same thing as Vestibular Rehabilitation (or rehab), since the issue is in the inner ear.  Chronic conditions like Meniere’s Disease may have intermittent success, but may be recurrent in the future due to the chronic nature of the condition. But BPPV conditions are completely treatable, and can be often eradicated in under a week, which is a tremendous relief to a patient.

Balance disorders can take longer to get rid of, or to minimize, because of the multiple systems that can be involved in such deficits.  Patients have to be prepared to work very hard in Vertigo PT to help to improve their balance. Dizziness is really just related to Vertigo, or a symptom of Vertigo. And feeling off-balance is connected to vertigo, proprioception, central conditions, or orthopedic issues as well.  Improper foot-ware, decreased sensation in the feet or legs, arthritis in leg joints, and may other orthopedic deficiencies can cause balance disorders that should be treated, before a patient’s balance continues to decline.

If a patient isn’t sure what to do to treat their problem, it’s always best to start with a visit to a Dr. and start with a diagnosis to get the condition properly classified. Then after the visit to the Dr., the patient can then come to Physical Therapy for Vertigo PT, so that the problem can be eliminated or improved.

Why Physical Therapy First?

 By: Terry Abrams

Are you or a family member dealing with pain and aren’t quite sure who you should go see? A physical therapist might not be the first person you think of, but hopefully, after reading this, it’ll help you understand how we can help.

What does a physical therapist do and how can they help with an injury?

A physical therapist can help you move better. Whether you are having trouble getting out of bed, picking up your kids, having difficulty reaching into the cupboards, or any other daily tasks that you’re having trouble doing, a PT can help.

. We spend one on one time with you to ensure that we tailor to your every need. We also come up with a comprehensive plan to help you get back to what YOU want to do, which is the whole point right? A physical therapist can help facilitate your recovery, with us giving you the tools to be successful. We want to empower you to be able to do things needed to keep you healthy for the long run.

Your physical therapist is focused on getting you back to the things you enjoy

If you choose PT first, you’ll feel better faster, and could potentially save money in the process! Who doesn’t love to save money? In most states, you can see a physical therapist first without needing to see anyone prior. Most people don’t know that, so we’re trying to make sure people understand they have a choice in where they want to go to get better.

I like to compare physical therapy to when something goes wrong with your car. If you need to invest in parts or work done to keep your car running properly, why wouldn’t you do the same thing with regards to your health?

There are many places you can go for an injury, hopefully, you know now that you can choose physical therapy first.

Office Worker Stretching Guide

 By: Terry Abrams

A majority of Americans spend 40 hours a week, 8 hours a day tied to a desk and staring at a computer. The downfall of working behind a desk is that it compromises the well being of your body. Not only does prolonged sitting affect cardiovascular health but also musculoskeletal integrity as well. Prolonged sitting along with bad posture can shorten hamstrings and hip flexors, contribute to neck and back pain, and even diminish core strength.
To keep your body in tip-top shape CardioFlex would like to share some tips on stretches and exercises you can do while at your desk.

(Tip: It is recommended to stand up, walk, stretch, etc. 5-10 min every hour.)
  1. Seated Hamstring Stretch: Hold Stretch for 30 seconds, perform 3 per side.
  2. Seated Thoracic Rotation: Hold stretch for 5 seconds, perform 10 per side.
  3. Upper Trapezius Stretch: Hold stretch for 30 seconds, perform 3 per side.
  4. Levator Scapulae Stretch: Hold for 30 seconds, perform 3 per side.
  5. Hip Flexor Stretch in Half Kneeling: Hold for 30 seconds, perform 3 per side.

Please consult a physical therapist or physician one-on-one if you have any questions, pain or other physical issues*

Physical Therapists Tips to Prevent Arthritis

By: Terry Abrams

Physical Therapy plays a big role in arthritis, it focuses on the body’s ability to engage in movement. Movement can be anything from getting in and out of chairs to climbing stairs, walking in your neighborhood, playing a sport or doing recreational activities. Arthritis commonly occurs when the cartilage — the slick, cushioning surface on the ends of bones — wears away, bone rubs against bone, causing pain, swelling and stiffness. Over time, joints can lose strength and pain may become chronic.

How To Prevent Arthritis? Simple Tips To Stay Healthy

You can’t always prevent Arthritis, there are many risk factors associated with it like increasing age, family history, and gender; women are more prone to Arthritis than men. You may be wondering why women are more prone to Arthritis, some factors that lead to this are : women have less knee cartilage than men due to hormonal difference, women are also at greater risk for an autoimmune condition called Rheumatoid Arthritis, emotional problems, lack of exercise etc.

Even though we can’t prevent the occurrence of Arthritis in most cases, we can give these steps a try and, perhaps, it will help you too.

  1. Maintain a Good Body weight — Excess body weight increases the risk factor for getting Arthritis. More weight means more pressure on joints which means faster joint wear out.
  2. Eat Fish rich in Omega 3 — Certain fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids (fish like salmonmackerelherringlake troutsardines and albacore tuna), a healthy polyunsaturated fat. Omega-3s have a number of health benefits — and may reduce inflammation in the body.
  3. Exercise — Exercise strengthens the muscles around the joints, which protects them from wear and tear. But avoid high impact exercises like long distance running, Soccer etc. as these have adverse effects and increases the wearing.
  4. Try to avoid any Injuries — when you injure your joint — for example, while playing sports or due to an accident — you can damage the cartilage in the knee and cause it to wear out more quickly.
  5. Take care of Joints — While doing physical actions like Lifting an Object lift with your legs instead of back this will reduce the strain on your joints. Similarly while carrying objects also try to distribute the weight.
  6. Stay away from High heels — Human foot is designed in such a way that it is distributing weight equally on entire feet. If you wear a high heels whole body weight is balanced by toes which in turn increases stress. So wear high heels only occasionally.
  7. Check your Vitamin D — Studies show that Vitamin D deficiency also results in Arthritis so include Vitamin D in your diet.
  8. Drink water — The cartilage in our joints is made up mostly of water, which is what makes it such a great cushion for the joints. When we’re dehydrated, water gets sucked out of the cartilage and it’s more easily damaged by wear and tear. So drink water.
  9. Consult your doctor — If your feel that you are having Arthritis, consult your doctor and take immediate steps to slow down the wear and tear on your joints.

Stretches for Morning Back Pain Relief by Physical Therapists

By: Terry Abrams

Here at CardioFlex, we know that on some mornings it’s harder to get out of bed than others. This is because one of the most common complaints that patients have over 50 is… lower back pain. CardioFlex would like to share some tips to help combat the stiffness and discomfort of lower back pain. Here are 5 stretches that you can do every morning before you get your day started. We hope you enjoy!

Lying Quadriceps Stretch

This list wouldn’t be complete without a stretch for the quadriceps and hip flexors. Lie sideways, keep the legs stacked and rest your head on the bottom arm.

Bend the top leg and grab its ankle with the top arms.

Pull the leg to bring its heel as close to the butt as possible.

Hold the stretch for 30 seconds. Then lie on the other side and stretch for the same duration.

Supine Spinal Twist

The supine twist stretches the spine and back muscles. It’ll also stimulate your kidneys, urinary bladder and other internal organs.

Lie on your back and keep the left knee bent at 90 degrees.

Lift the left foot and cross it over the right leg. Then use your right arm to press the right knee to the floor.

Keep the shoulders flat on the floor throughout. Hold the stretch for 20 seconds, then alternate sides.

Side Stretch

This stretch targets your obliques (side abs), outer thighs and the shoulders. Stand upright and place your left arm on a chair or bed. Cross the left leg in front of the right one.

Raise your right arm straight over your head while you bend your hips to the right side.

Extend your right arm to the left as far as possible.

Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds and then switch sides.

Neck Stretches Side to Side

These stretches alleviate neck pain and undo the effects of sitting at a desk all day. Sit upright, then lean your head to the left side. Pull it with your left arm and stretch it for 15 seconds. Bend your neck to the right side and hold the stretch for the same duration.

Knee to Chest Stretch

This exercise stretches the lower back, hamstrings, and glutes. Feel free to perform it while lying on the floor. Lie on your back and bend your knees.

Grab both legs with your hands and pull your knees as close to the chest as possible.

Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, then rest and repeat once.

Remember to breathe deeply while holding the stretch.

CardioFlex is open Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 7 pm, and specializes in Orthopedics, Sports Injury, Neurological Conditions, and other Specialized Programs like TMJ treatment, knee rehabilitation, herniated disk treatments and more. Whatever your condition is, come in for a consultation. We accept all insurances, including Medicaid and Worker’s Comp.

If for any reason these exercises increase the pain or do not relieve any symptoms it may be beneficial to consult a physical therapist.

Low Back Pain? You need Physical Therapy

 By: Terry Abrams

If you’re suffering from low back pain and wondering why your insurance company won’t approve an MRI before going to physical therapy – there was a great study done on about 800 individuals where they compared two groups, published originally in the journal Health Services Research. One group went straight to imaging and one tried physical therapy first. What they found, was that the ones that went straight to imaging (X-rays, CT scans, MRI) had a greater likelihood to go to surgery, have injections, and end up in the emergency room compared to those who went to Physical Therapy first. The article describes physical therapy as an approach that “focuses on educating patients about what might be causing their back pain, assuring them that most problems subside in time, and engaging them in their therapy.”

Physical therapists are specially trained experts in low back pain.

They are trained to identify any red flags or emergencies that would require further medical assessment. They’re also trained to help you understand your low back pain, find the root cause of your condition, and give you some practical advice on how to resolve those issues without medication and surgery. So, if you’re dealing with low back pain and you have not received the authorization for an MRI, I encourage you to find a local, licensed physical therapist in your area and have a conversation about your condition.

“What sets physical therapy apart from other types of treatment is the quality time we spend with our clients,” says Terry Abrams owner and physical therapist at CardioFlex Therapy in Davie, Florida. “Not only will we teach you about your condition and ways you can help yourself, but we will also start you on a program made just for you to get you moving again. A program customized just for you, and none of the side effects of surgery and pain medication.”

NOTE: your physical therapist is well trained in warning signs that would require you to see a doctor for further testing if required.

Conditions you didn't know Physical Therapy can help with

CardioFlex Therapy in Davie, Fl, is well prepared for any type of condition that may require physical therapy. In this article we will discuss some of the common ailments we treat, many which you didn’t know we could help you with.

2- Headaches: The most common type of headaches may be caused by poor posture, stress, muscle tightness, or a neck injury. At CardioFlex, a physical therapist can help to determine the type of headaches you have and what the best treatments may be to help alleviate your symptom, performing manual massage to help loosen up tight muscles, and correcting any posture problems to prevent future headaches.

3- Incontinence: Most common in women, incontinence can be due to pregnancy, childbirth, surgery, pelvic floor weakness or spasm, or overall deconditioning. A Physical Therapist can help to strengthen the proper muscles with a variety of techniques, depending on your symptoms.

4- TMJ: Or temporomandibular jaw dysfunction, commonly jaw pain or an unusual popping or clicking of the jaw while talking or eating. TMJ disorders are common and can be treated by one of our professionals at CardioFlex Therapy.

5- Concussions: Athletes or victims of car accident may have concussions that may cause long term issues, like dizziness/vertigo, balance problems, or headaches, all of which can be treated by a physical therapist, allowing the individual to fully recover.

6- Lymphedema: A chronic and incurable swelling of affected body parts, usually arms and legs, very common after certain type of cancer treatments, such as breast cancer. CardioFlex Therapy trained Physical Therapists can perform certain types of lymphatic drainage massage or use certain wrapping techniques to help decrease swelling in a limb.

Physical therapy helps people of all ages who have medical conditions, illnesses or injuries that limit their regular ability to move and function. Physical therapy will help you reduce or eliminate pain, improve mobility, avoid surgery, recover from a stroke, recover or prevent sports injury, and manage age related issues like arthritis. It will also help you with balance, preventing you from falling, manage diabetes and cardiovascular issues, and heart and lung diseases.

Sports Therapy Tips for Hips

At CardioFlex Therapy’s outpatient clinic we offer sports therapy, which helps top athletes not only recover from injuries (rehab) but also prevent them (known as pre-hab). Sports therapy is a segment of the global healthcare industry that has recently become quite popular due to its applications and positive results in sports.

The hips are the human body’s main engine and center of mass. The largest and most powerful muscle groups—the glutes, quads, and hamstrings—all connect at the hips, and they allow you to run, jump, climb, and swim. The joint is crucial to all movement, in sports and day-to-day life. Persistent hip pain can be very debilitating, we will concentrate on how physical therapy can seriously impact this part of our body.

While the following may be common causes of hip pain in athletes, there are other causes of hip pain that can sideline a player from the action:

  • Muscle Strains: The most common injuries of the hip and groin region in athletes are muscle strain injuries. Muscles around the hip joint are especially prone to this type of injury because they are subject to eccentric contraction. Eccentric contractions cause tremendous forces in the muscle and can lead to a muscle strain. Muscle strains around the hip include groin pulls and hamstring strains.
  • Hip Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa over the outside of the hip joint, so-called trochanteric bursitis, can cause pain with hip movement. Treatment of hip bursitis is often effective, but the condition has a problem of coming back and sometimes becoming a persistent problem.
  • Contusions (Hip Pointer): A direct blow to the outside of the hip causes an injury to one of the large bones of the pelvis, the ileum. When a contusion is sustained in an athlete over the outside of the hip, the injury is called a hip pointer.
  • Stress Fractures: Stress fractures of the hip are usually seen in long-distance runners, and much more commonly in women than in men. These injuries are usually seen in endurance athletes with deficient nutrition or eating disorders.
  • Hip Labral Tear: The labrum of the hip is a cuff of thick tissue that surrounds the hip socket. The labrum helps to support the hip joint. When a labral tear of the hip occurs, a piece of this tissue can become pinched in the joint causing pain and catching sensations. Much more has been learned about hip labral tears, to the point that some orthopedic surgeons are concerned these injuries are overdiagnosed. However, some patients with hip labral tears can find improvement with treatment of this condition.
  • Femoroacetabular Impingement: Femoroacetablar impingement, often referred to as FAI, is a condition where bone spurs form along the edges of the ball-and-socket hip joint and cause limited mobility of the joint and damage to soft tissues including the labrum. FAI is thought by many surgeons to be a precursor to arthritis of the hip joint.
  • Osteitis Pubis: Osteitis pubis is thought to be due to the repetitive pull of muscles over the front of the hip joint. Usually, pain is activity related and often seen in runners, soccer players and hockey players. The x-rays may show signs causing concern for infection, but osteitis pubis usually resolves with rest and anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Sports Hernias: Sports hernias are a problem seen most commonly in hockey players, but can be seen in other sports that require repetitive twisting and turning at high speeds. The problem is thought to be due to an imbalance of the strong muscles of the thigh and the relatively weaker muscles of the abdomen.
  • Snapping Hip Syndrome: Snapping hip syndrome is a word used to describe three distinct hip problems. The first is when the IT band snaps over the outside of the thigh. The second occurs when the deep hip flexor snaps over the front of the hip joint. Finally, tears of the cartilage, or labrum, around the hip socket can cause a snapping sensation.
  • Traumatic Hip Subluxation & Dislocation: Complete dislocation of the hip joint is a very unusual hip injury—most commonly hip dislocations occur in high-speed car crashes. However, hip subluxations, an injury where the ball of the ball-and-socket hip joint is pushed part of the way out of joint, are being recognized as a possible cause of hip pain in athletes. A hip subluxation is the type of injury that is thought to have ended Bo Jackson’s athletic career.
  • Hip Arthritis: Arthritis of the hips is increasingly seen in athletes as the age in which we participate in sports increases. Older athletes can experience joint stiffness and pain as a result of hip arthritis.
  • Low Back Strain: While not a problem in the hip region, low back problems can often cause pain around the buttock and hips.

For serious athletes, a person recovering from an injury or anyone with a specific performance goal in mind, a visit to a Physical Therapist can increase awareness of weakness, asymmetry or problem areas and give you tangible, functional ways to improve.

The most common steps during an athlete’s visit to our clinic are:

  • – sports massage
  • – sports and occupational injury management & rehabilitation
  • – ultrasound therapy treatment
  • – sports performance improvement & management using muscle activation techniques
  • – advice on how to improve posture, flexibility & stretching

CardioFlex uses latest tools in Sports Rehab & Physical Therapy

CardioFlex is excited to introduce what we all call the coolest tool for Sports Rehab & Physical Therapy performance training; The Recoil 360°. “Resistance and assistance training is key to maximizing power, speed and vertical jump”. This Bungee Resistance Trainer helps us to train athletes in every direction, with or without a partner. We can train patients for any sport: baseball, soccer, football, basketball, tennis, rugby, lacrosse, swimming, martial arts, hockey, volleyball, softball, track & field, rowing, golf, bowling, and more.

At CardioFlex, we will use this device for specific resisted agility and plyometric rehabilitation exercises to build explosive muscle strength and power in our patient’s core and lower body. The Recoil 360° allows patients to maximize motions that are sport specific with resistance and assistance training. The cord stretches against movements to build strength, or pulls patients along to increase speed and improve the body’s efficiency during direction changes.

We will help our patients to improve their overall athleticism with increased power, explosiveness, and strength, with this bungee cord and all of our other equipment. We can either train patients at our Davie Facility or have one of our Physical Therapists visit them at their home. All About TMJ

TMJ TherapyDid you know that at CardioFlex Therapy in Davie, we have specialized treatment programs for a wide variety of conditions? One of our most popular treatment programs is for TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) disorder.

You may be wondering what a TMJ disorder even is. Surprisingly, approximately 12% of people in the United States will experience TMJ disorders in their lifetime. TMJ tends to affect more women than men and can be commonly associated with symptoms of jaw pain or an unusual popping or clicking of the jaw while talking or eating.

Those affected by TMJ will most often note the restriction of jaw movement which can cause severe discomfort. Some individuals may experience a subset of TMJ symptoms including head or back aches, migraines, and ear issues like buzzing, ringing, numbness, or pain that may spread to the cheeks.

The TMJ connects the mandible (lower jaw) to the temporal bone (skull). Likewise, specific key muscles used for chewing are attached to the mandible and may become sore with a TMJ disorder.
It is difficult to attribute TMJ disorders to any one cause. Moreover, TMJ disorders may be caused by:
  • grinding or clenching of teeth while sleeping
  • physical injury
  • arthritis
  • dental surgery
  • autoimmune diseases
  • infections
  • environmental, genetic, or hormonal factors
Luckily, TMJ disorders are common and can be treated at home or by one of our professionals at CardioFlex Therapy in Davie, Florida. We recommend you first try some simple, lifestyle changes to possibly correct the concern. It all breaks down to rest: if you reduce movement and rest the jaw, changes may occur:
  • Avoid chewing gum & tensing your jaw.
  • Try to eat soft foods and lightly massage or practice stretching the jaw.
  • Wear a mouth guard at night if you tend to clench your teeth.
If you are still experiencing discomfort, please call us at 954-693-9090 or stop by our facility for a consultation. Our professionals will arrange an individualized approach to correct your TMJ and help you manage the pain associated with it.
