What can Occupational Therapy do for you?

http://www.cardioflextherapy.com/blog/what-can-occupational-therapy-do-for-you/

Occupational Performance is defined as the individual’s ability to accomplish the tasks required by his or her role and related to his or her developmental stage. Occupational performance includes self-care, work, and play or leisure time performance. This leads us to what Occupational Therapy is: a profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations). Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent—or live better with—injury, illness, or disability.
Common occupational therapy interventions include helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury to regain skills, and providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes. Occupational therapy services typically include:
  • + an individualized evaluation, during which the client/family and occupational therapist determine the person’s goals,
  • + customized intervention to improve the person’s ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals, and
  • + an outcomes evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met and/or make changes to the intervention plan.
Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment and/or task to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team. It is an evidence-based practice deeply rooted in science.
The profession of Occupational Therapy makes valuable contributions in helping people “Live Life to Its Fullest” despite their condition or surrounding environment.

Occupational therapy services typically include:

  1. Customized treatment programs to improve one’s ability to perform daily activities
  2. Comprehensive home and job site evaluations with adaptation recommendations
  3. Performance skills assessments and treatment
  4. Adaptive equipment recommendations and usage training
  5. Guidance to family members and caregivers.
We encourage you to view our video from The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) describing how Occupational Therapy helps people of every age, every day.

Fix Your Posture To Improve Your Strength

http://www.cardioflextherapy.com/blog/fix-your-posture-to-improve-your-strength/

Most of us who work in an office setting are most likely sitting slouched over our desk chair and staring at a computer screen creating bad posture in our bodies. Having poor posture can result in tremendous structural damage to the spine, shoulders, hips, and knees. It can lead to things such as joint pain throughout your body, reduced flexibility, and compromised muscles which can limit your body’s ability to burn fat and build strength.

Over time, your poor posture takes a tremendous toll on your spine, shoulders, hips, and knees. In fact, it can cause a cascade of structural flaws that result in acute problems, such as joint pain throughout your body, reduced flexibility, and compromised muscles, all of which can limit your ability to burn fat and build strength. But don’t worry—all these problems can be corrected. Are you ready to straighten yourself out? Use this head-to-toe guide to make sure your posture is picture-perfect.

A treatment approach that has been clinically effective involves stretching of over active/tight muscles, strengthening of under active/weak muscles, and utilization of exercises that incorporate functional movement patterns last. Article credits to BodyStructure.

CardioFlex uses latest tools in Sports Rehab & Physical Therapy

CardioFlex is excited to introduce what we all call the coolest tool for Sports Rehab & Physical Therapy performance training; The Recoil 360°. “Resistance and assistance training is key to maximizing power, speed and vertical jump”. This Bungee Resistance Trainer helps us to train athletes in every direction, with or without a partner. We can train patients for any sport: baseball, soccer, football, basketball, tennis, rugby, lacrosse, swimming, martial arts, hockey, volleyball, softball, track & field, rowing, golf, bowling, and more.

At CardioFlex, we will use this device for specific resisted agility and plyometric rehabilitation exercises to build explosive muscle strength and power in our patient’s core and lower body. The Recoil 360° allows patients to maximize motions that are sport specific with resistance and assistance training. The cord stretches against movements to build strength, or pulls patients along to increase speed and improve the body’s efficiency during direction changes.

We will help our patients to improve their overall athleticism with increased power, explosiveness, and strength, with this bungee cord and all of our other equipment. We can either train patients at our Davie Facility or have one of our Physical Therapists visit them at their home. We offer In-Home Therapy to all of the following counties: Broward, Miami-Dade, & Palm Beach.

Therapeutic Exercises for Increasing Ankle & Calf Flexibility

At CardioFlex Therapy, we often treat patients who need to increase the range of motion in their ankles. Commonly, patients have tightness when raising their feet upwards into Dorsiflexion, which affects their bio-mechanics and how effectively that they can run, and even walk. By stretching out their ankles, calves, and feet with two great stretches, we assist our patients in accomplishing their functional goals. These exercises are called the Gastrocnemius Stretch (a straight-knee stretch) and the Soleus Stretch (a bent-knee stretch).
Treatment at our Outpatient Clinic in Davie, FL

The Gastrocnemius is the larger, posterior muscle within the leg. It originates at the back of the femur and patella and is attached to the Achilles tendon, along with the Soleus. The Gastrocnemius is responsible for providing the propelling force for actions like running and jumping.

Lying just beneath the Gastrocnemius is the Soleus. The Soleus originates from the upper portions of the tibia and fibula, the bones of the lower leg, and joins the Gastrocnemius to attach to the Achilles tendon. The Soleus is responsible for flexion of the ankle joint, especially when the knee is bent, therefore extending the foot downward.

Our professionals at CardioFlex Therapy recommend that you take a few minutes each day to stretch these essential muscles. Not only does this consistent practice release tension, but also will prevent future injury. Follow these easy directions to properly execute these exercises at home:

Soleus Stretch:

Soleus Stretch
Standing - Press the ball of the foot against a wall. Extend your other leg behind you with a slight bend to the knee. Your front foot should feel the stretch. Alternatively, use an angled platform with the knee bent and other foot slightly behind you and bent (see below).

Seated - With legs extended in front of you, place an object like a foam roller or pillow under your knees. Use a strap or your hands to pull one toe toward you into dorsiflexion.

Gastrocnemius Stretch:

Gastrocnemius Stretch

Standing 2 -3 feet in front of a wall, extend your hands to press against the wall and lean slightly in.  With one foot, take a step forward and bend the knee. The back foot should remain straight with the heel to the ground and toes pointed to the wall. Alternatively, you may also use an angled platform to perform this exercise, as shown below.

Light the Night Walk - Fort Lauderdale

CardioFlex is proud to support the Light the Night Walk Fort Lauderdale benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This event takes place on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at CB Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, FL. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk funds treatments that are saving the lives of patients today. LLS is making cures happen by providing patient support services, advocating for lifesaving treatments and pioneering the most promising cancer research anywhere. And it’s all happening now. Not someday, but today.

When you or someone you love hears the words “you have cancer”… It’s one of the darkest moments in your life.

At Light The Night, it is our aim to bring light to the darkness of cancer through research and cures. Light The Night is a series of fundraising campaigns benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) funding of research to find blood cancer cures. We bring hope instead of despair by working to ensure access to treatments for all blood cancer patients. We bring communities together to celebrate those who are fighting the disease and to honor those we have lost.

We are taking steps to end cancer. WE LIGHT THE NIGHT.

The Wine Opener - Sip...Savor...Cure!

CardioFlex is proud to support The Wine Opener – Sip…Savor…Cure benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This event takes place on Friday, October 20, 2017 at the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club in Boca Raton, FL.

When his son, Nicholas, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, Sal Capano became a dedicated and determined volunteer for the CF Foundation. He created the Care Today…Cure Tomorrow event and never missed an opportunity to educate the world about CF and recruit people to help in his quest to raise funds and find a cure for Nicholas and everyone else who battles the disease. Sal Capano passed away in 2007. In tribute, his wife Lauri and a group of Sal’s friends, affectionately known as “Sal’s Pals,” continued his “Care Today…Cure Tomorrow event in the Spirit of Sal Capano” to help raise funds for CF research.

Seven years ago, event chairs Lauri Capano, David Greenberg and Michael Rankin added a wine-tasting element to the dinner event and created what we know today as “The Wine Opener. Sip…Savor…Cure!” On October 20, 2017, in addition to enjoying rich cuisines, fine wines and the opportunity to dance the night away, event guests will be on hand to help us honor South Florida’s Finest Couples.
